Back in the Field Again

July 10, 2020

One idea capturing the imaginations of many during the coronavirus lockdown is that “nature is healing” with fewer people interacting with the outdoors. Here at the Anacostia Watershed Society, we know that our work as humans in the ecosystem is vital to help the Anacostia River continue to get healthier… Trees we’ve planted along the riverbanks need human hands to prune coiling invasives that prevent the tree’s leaves from reaching the sun.  Juvenile mussels get measured and counted, teaching us where the best habitat for them to thrive is along the river, and we take water quality samples to guide our decisions along the way.  We’re healing the blight of impervious surfaces and replacing them with rain gardens comprised of native plants.

It’s been hard to get as much done without the help of our volunteers, but the AWS staff has been busy in the field!  Take a look in the gallery below.
